3 Ways to Reduce Christmas Stress

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” The Christmas lights are twinkling, hot cocoa is poured, and the fire is glowing as you gather with the people you love. It’s the picture of peace—at least in theory.

For many of us, the holiday season is filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful moments. But it can also come with a long to-do list and mounting pressure. Finding the perfect gifts, juggling social events, navigating family dynamics, and managing finances can quickly turn festive cheer into holiday stress. Add colder weather and shorter days, and the thought of trekking to one more store… alone in the chaos. It’s no wonder this time of year can feel overwhelming.

If December has you feeling stretched thin, you’re not alone. Over 60% of adults report increased stress during the holiday season. The good news? Recognizing the signs of stress is the first step toward managing it well. With a little awareness and intention, it is possible to slow down, feel more grounded, and truly enjoy the season.

Today, we’re sharing three simple ways to make your Christmas holiday more peaceful, nourishing, and enjoyable for everyone.

What Exactly Is Overwhelm?

Overwhelm sets in when life’s demands begin to feel greater than our ability to manage them. Decisions become harder to make, motivation dips, and even enjoyable social events or everyday responsibilities can start to feel like too much. You may find yourself withdrawing—not because you don’t care, but because you simply don’t have the energy to push through. When stress is fueled by many different pressures at once, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s causing the anxiety, frustration, or sense of overload.

So what can you do when overwhelm takes over?

Here are a few simple tips to help you move through it—so you can get back to enjoying the moments that truly deserve to be celebrated.

#1 Take Mental Breaks to Reduce Christmas Stress

When you’re feeling tense, it can be hard to see anything beyond what’s right in front of you. It’s like being stuck deep in the forest—so focused on navigating each step that you can’t see the bigger picture. When overwhelm takes hold, even small tasks can feel heavy. Mounting pressures may push you to the edge. Life can start to feel like a constant push through your to-do list, with no room to pause or catch your breath.

When you notice that “survival mode” kicking in, give yourself permission to stop—just for a moment.

Slow things down with a few deep, steady breaths. Inhale slowly, letting the breath fill your body, and exhale just as gently. This brief pause creates space between you and the stress, allowing your nervous system to settle and your perspective to return. You might also try box breathing: inhale for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four, and pause for four before the next breath. Repeat this for a few minutes and notice how your body begins to feel calmer, steadier, and more at ease.

Avoid the “What If?”s

The parties, the dinners, the gift-giving—this year, so much of the holiday season can feel uncertain. When life feels unpredictable, it’s easy to get caught in a loop of “What if?”

  • What if someone gets sick or plans have to change?
  • What if family tensions resurface… again?
  • What if there isn’t enough money for all the gifts we hoped to give?

These thoughts quietly add fuel to stress and worry. The more time we spend imagining what might go wrong, the less energy we have for what’s happening right now—including the simple actions that help us stay grounded and calm.

When those familiar “What if?” thoughts start to creep in, pause and gently acknowledge them. Then, try shifting the narrative by reframing them into more supportive, realistic perspectives:

  • Let’s focus on enjoying Christmas Day together—and maybe even start a new tradition.
  • I’m looking forward to time with family that’s filled with laughter and connection.
  • We’re creative. Thoughtful, meaningful gifts don’t have to come with a big price tag.

This practice, often called reframing your thoughts, can be a powerful way to quiet anxiety and bring your attention back to what truly matters. With a little mindfulness, you can protect your sense of peace and create a holiday season that feels calmer, lighter, and more joyful.

#3 Make Time To Laugh and Reduce Christmas Stress

In the height of holiday planning, it’s easy to forget to carve out time for fun and laughter. Laughter is the quickest and easiest form of stress relief and provides a number of short and long-term benefits

Did you know that laughter:

  • Increases your intake of oxygen, stimulates your heart, and boosts endorphins.
  • Calms down your stress response, causing a relaxed feeling.
  • Improves your immune system, can function as a natural painkiller, and can lessen depression or anxiety.

So, next time you find yourself tensing up, find a funny YouTube video. Or, look up a funny joke or play a game with the family. This is a great way to spend quality time and get everyone laughing!
